DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods: Who Will Take Mick Gordon’s Role?

The composer of DOOM and DOOM Eternal will not be back in the standalone DLC.

We previously discussed how Mick Gordon, the previous composer of DOOM’s revival, has left his position after an argument with id Software and Bethesda over the mastering of the DOOM Eternal soundtrack. (To explain it simply: he had certain tricks in the mixdown of his songs, which were lost, as someone changed how the songs sounded, meaning the mastering of these songs got worse.) This was a dumb move on Bethesda’s end (why hire a composer then if their work ends up getting ruined in the final mixdown, even though they can deal with that just fine?). Until now, we had no clue who will take Gordon’s role…

On Twitter, Andrew Hulshult announced that he will be one of the composers of DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods. He’s joined by David Levy. Let’s see a few examples of Hulshult’s work: Rise of the Triad (2013), Bombshell (2016, initially, it was meant to be a Duke Nukem game), Dusk (2018), Quake Champions (2018, co-composer: Chris Vrenna), but he will also be a composer for Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded or Wrath: Aeon of Ruin (he’ll be joined by Marcin Przybylowicz and Bjørn Jacobsen, respectively). Levy previously composed music for The Seed or Stardrive.

„The first of a two-part story expansion for DOOM Eternal, “The Ancient Gods, Part One” casts players once again as the DOOM Slayer to confront an ancient evil [Khan Maykr, Icon of Sin] awoken from an imbalance in the heavens. Ripping and tearing through never-before-seen locations in the DOOM universe, players will face off against fierce new demons and discover a new chapter in the DOOM Slayer’s story,” the DLC’s press release says.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part One, which will NOT require the base game, will launch on October 20 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.
