MOVIE NEWS – The Book of Boba Fett: Robert Rodríguez affirms that the series will give “more than it promises” and analyzes the use of Stagecraft technology in films and series.

The final episode of The Mandalorian season 2 had many surprises, one of which was The Book of Boba Fett’s coming, which will tell the story of the bounty hunter who has been given new light in the series. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are also working on the spinoff series. Still, after The Mandalorian season 2, Robert Rodriguez will return to the director’s chair and executive producing the show. In a recent interview, Rodriguez gushed about the Boba Fett storyline.

Collider asked the director about the series, which relatively little is known, even though it’s scheduled to premiere on Disney+ this December. Robert Rodriguez wasn’t keen to go into details either, but he did gush about The Book of Boba Fett: “Wait until the end! You’ll be completely blown away! That’s all I can say. I can blather on about it all I want because I know it will exceed expectations. It will very, very much exceed. People will be thrilled when they finally see it.”

Hopefully, it will indeed be so, and the fall-and-rise story of the once-allied assassin-bounty hunter with the Empire will hit home. By the way, while Rodriguez couldn’t talk about the story, the revolutionary technology, StageCraft, used in this series, is much more so. The essence of this, of course, is that the set is partly or entirely digital, meaning that the actors perform in front of a real-time changing backdrop with special effects. Surprisingly or not, the director is not so keen on this technology. He says that although it’s perfect for a series because it’s easy to reuse different backgrounds when the heroes revisit a location, saving time and money, he wouldn’t use it in a film, mainly because you don’t see many sets reused in the plot. A few minutes or seconds of StageCraft aren’t worth messing around with.

So Robert Rodriguez prefers a traditional green background because, in that case, you only have to make decisions about special effects in post-production anyway. With a series, these decisions are made in the course of a previous season or during development. Still, with a film, the final film image is often created on the cutting table in front of the computer, so the director and his team can, for example, darken a background that was lit on set during the digital edit. So the sequel to his film We Can Be Heroes, which focuses on children’s superheroes, will not have StageCraft, which Robert Rodriguez says would drag out pre-production too much, which would be a big bummer for a film with 11 fast-growing kids because, by the time they’re ready to shoot, the main characters have grown and changed a lot.

So The Book of Boba Fett will be on Disney+ this December. The Book of Boba Fett will show what has happened to the anti-hero since The Empire Strikes Back. Recently, there was an uproar over the suggestion of an alternative, more politically correct name for Fett’s ship, Slave 1.
