MOVIE NEWS – Ridley Scott is proud of his script for Gladiator 2 and the way it carries on Maximus’ legacy.
More than two decades after the release of the critically acclaimed, award-winning film, a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is in the works. Despite the ending of the first film seemingly sealing the deal, Scott revealed that the script for Gladiator 2 has already been written, and thankfully they have found a “logical” way to continue Maximus’ story.
“Oh, it’s been written. It’s already been written. We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go.”
“You can’t just do another Gladiator type movie. You’ve got to follow… there’s enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it.”
Rumours of a Gladiator sequel have surfaced in the past, and the “logical” return to the story is expected to be linked to the character of Lucius Verus, Lucilla’s young son, played by Spencer Treat Clark in the first film. Back in 2001, the apparent storyline of the planned sequel would have put Lucius in the lead role and would have picked up roughly fifteen years after the first film. The plot would have revolved around Lucius seeking the truth about his biological father, only to discover that he is, in fact, the hidden son of Maximus.
The latest rumours suggest that this could still be the idea behind the plot of the second instalment, with the original film’s title character Russell Crowe reportedly favouring Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth as Maximus’ son.
Ridley Scott recently said he was determined to bring Gladiator 2 to the screen. It looks like the sequel to the iconic film will be Scott’s next project after Kitbag, starring Joaquin Phoenix, which follows Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power in the 19th century.
