Square Enix is already working on a Chrono Cross remaster of the PlayStation game, which could be a nice touch.

Chrono Cross was released in November 1999 for PS1 in Japan, and in August 2000, North America also got the RPG (while Europe didn’t!), set in the same world as Chrono Trigger. That game was released in 1995 for SNES (then in Japan in ’99, and overseas in 2001 for PS1). It’s incomprehensible that Square didn’t even think of possibly doing something with this game since Chrono Trigger has become a classic from the company, which is much better known worldwide thanks to Final Fantasy.

In the latest episode of the XboxEra podcast, Shpeshal Nick claims that Chrono Cross Remastered is in Square Enix’s plans, and this time the game would not only be coming to PlayStation 5 (and PlayStation 4?), but the Japanese publisher is planning to make the project multiplatform. According to him, the as-yet-unannounced remaster could be confirmed by Square Enix within the next month, and it could be the big PlayStation project we wrote about earlier when Irish singer Éabha McMahon hinted at it back in October.

A Chrono Chross remaster was mentioned in the big GeForce Now leak we covered, so the leak is pretty close to the truth so far for Square Enix-related titles, but of course, it’s worth pointing out here that the Japanese publisher has yet to confirm a Chrono Cross remaster officially. That would be a good thing because Square hasn’t only become popular among gamers who love the RPG genre thanks to Final Fantasy.

Suppose the announcement is made in December (and probably early in that month). In that case, we can be sure that it will be made during The Game Awards because after that, the whole gaming industry will start to focus on Christmas instead of development. We could put money on this and not lose much.
