MOVIE NEWS – Steve Conrad, newly confirmed for the Game of Thrones series, is best known to audiences as the writer of the hit series Patriot.

Around the time of the conclusion of Game of Thrones, HBO Max had already pitched several prequel ideas, but most of them are still under wraps. One of the prequel stories mentioned was Dunk & Egg, a potential prequel series based on George R.R. Martin‘s fantasy novella series whose creators have reportedly signed Steve Conrad to write and executive produce the series. Although no official word from HBO on the subject has yet been received, fans of Game of Thrones will be excited to hear the news – finally, a prequel that will probably be something!

Martin has written three ‘tales’ about the duo; all set almost a century before the events of Game of Thrones, based on his novelisation of The Song of Fire and Ice. Starting with The Hedge Knight in 1998, followed by Sworn Sword in 2003 and The Mystery Knight in 2010. As with his novels, Martin has been promising to continue the story of Dunk and Egg for years, but so far, none of their stories has been published.

The volumes were illustrated by Gary Gianni and were collected in the 2015 Martin book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. A year before the book’s release, Martin had talked about a TV adaptation in the works, but that was about the only mention of the project until a January report revealed that the series was still on HBO’s schedule.

Assuming that the stories published so far will be part of a nine-novel series if they do indeed start filming the episodes in the foreseeable future, it’s possible that, like Game of Thrones, they could run out of printed material very soon… In any case, Martin’s fans are hoping that this TV announcement is a sign that we will quickly see our beloved heroes on paper again.

In the meantime, we won’t be without a series set in the Game of Thrones universe, as House of the Dragon – a prequel focusing on the Targaryen family – is due on HBO next year as the first prequel series to the original series, which ended in May 2019. While critics, fans and Martin himself were hugely disappointed by the finale of Game of Thrones, we’re curious to see if the prequel series will be able to do anything to sweeten the bitter memory of the series’ end.
