After the acquisitions of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal, the fate of Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy is in jeopardy.

The future of Square Enix’s Marvel games could be in jeopardy after the giant was forced to put three of its development studios, Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, up for sale. This will bring several IPs into the Embracer Group’s Swedish conglomerate portfolio, including licenses such as Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Many approvals are required from external companies, including some potential licensors.

As we said in the acquisition news, due to the partnership agreement with Marvel, both games will remain part of Square Enix, which brings us to statements from Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors regarding the games. “All games that the studios have developed are included in the transaction. However, some external approvals are needed from external parties in order to close this transaction. And potentially licensors, as you’ve mentioned here, could be one of those approvals needed,” Wingefors explains. So the fate of Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy remains in Disney’s hands.

One of the most talked-about points of the move between Embracer Group and Square Enix is the value of the three studios: $300 million.

According to analysts, this amount is due to the dismal performance of the two games set in the Marvel universes: the Avengers is Square Enix’s biggest disappointment, and Guardians of the Galaxy has been slow to take off. Despite the results, Star-Lord and Co. have found a large audience on Xbox Game Pass so that we may see more of the franchise in the future.
