However, it also means we’ll have to move the rumoured exclusive gameplay mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II off our calendars later.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities (headquartered in Hong Kong), wrote on Twitter: “My latest supply chain check suggests that the assembler and several component providers of the PlayStation VR2 will start mass production with about 1.5M units shipments in [the second half of] 2022. Sony may launch it in Q1 23, depending on the development schedule of PlayStation VR2 game titles.”

He added that one of the main changes in the production of PlayStation VR was that Sony put the cameras directly into the headset. It was not the case with the previous generation model. The PlayStation Camera was needed, as it had to be connected to the PlayStation 4 to track the LED lights on the PlayStation VR. PlayStation VR2 will be simpler and easier to use, to everyone’s delight…
Ming-Chi Kuo added, “The most notable hardware upgrade for PS VR2 is to start using optical modules. PS VR1 doesn’t equip with optical modules. PS VR2 adopts six optical modules (four 720p IR cameras and two eye-tracking cameras). Genius is the leading lens supplier. In addition, Genius is also the primary supplier of aspherical lenses for PS VR2. In the [augmented reality / virtual reality / mixed reality] era, I think Genius’s high-ASP orders of the aspherical lens, Fresnel lens, and Pancake from both Apple and non-Apple will be a new robust growth driver. Other critical suppliers of PS VR2 worth noting include Goertek (assembly), SDC (OLED panel), MediaTek (processor), etc.”
Sony has not officially announced when PlayStation VR2 will ship to stores (or when it will be available to order via PlayStation Direct), but late 2022 and early 2023 have been frequently mentioned.
