The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, which launched in November 2020, and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which saves on the cost of the Blu-ray drive, have reached a milestone in sales.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed to Gamesindustry that the two PlayStation 5 models (without giving more details, so we don’t know the breakdown) have sold a total of over 20 million units (so it’s taken just over a year and a half). Veronica Rogers, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) ‘s senior vice president of global sales and business operations, said the company was pleased to share this achievement, which was reached slower than with the PlayStation 4.

“We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally. Since PlayStation 5’s launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over, and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand drives us and inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue creating the best place to play.

To those fans who have yet to get their hands on a console, please know that we are planning a significant ramp-up in PlayStation 5 production this year, and we are working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants one,” Rogers said.

It would be helped by, for example, PlayStation Direct being available in more places, as it would outright cut out the scalpers from the picture, as Sony sells the consoles directly to the customers via this site. However, it is still an expanding service, so it’s not available in many countries even today.
