A Marvel Touch For Electronic Arts’ Last FIFA Cash Pump

Even though FIFA and Electronic Arts are breaking up (next year’s annual football game will be EA Sports FC 24), they’re throwing a spanner in the works for FIFA Ultimate Team.

EA Sports has announced on Twitter that it is teaming up with Disney (Marvel Entertainment) to bring a new FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT for short) Heroes to the football field, and they’ve been reimagined in the context of Marvel comics. So they are trying to appeal to the younger generation and comic book fans to suck their money out because when it comes to any Ultimate Team, there are loot boxes and a lot of money.

To quote the announcement, let’s see what kind of PR hype they’re trying to pull off: “This collaboration between two of the world’s most extensive entertainment brands will bring some of the game’s fan favourites to the game and celebrate their larger-than-life cult hero status alongside the fantastic artists at Marvel. Recognizing their memorable careers for club and country, each  FIFA World Cup FUT Hero will receive a unique illustrated FUT item at the World Cup game mode launch, with base versions of FUT Heroes being available at the launch of FIFA 23.

The collaboration will include other vanity items related to the fan-favourite heroes being immortalized as Marvel-inspired Heroes, including tifos, kits, balls, and more. Fans will also be able to get their hands on a forthcoming online Marvel Heroes comic book alongside Marvel-written bios, with limited physical quantities to be made available later. More info on the in-game vanity items and comic book availability will be available closer to the holiday period.”

Those who pre-order the FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition by August 21 will also get a FIFA World Cup Hero item available for a limited time, along with a few other extras. Still, hopefully, no one is thinking about the Nintendo Switch version of the game, as that hasn’t changed in years and has long been available with the Legacy Edition tag (signifying its neglect). At least on PC, they are FINALLY upgrading to the current-gen edition, which is at least a year late, because it was acceptable for FIFA 21 in 2020, but they had no excuse for it for FIFA 22 last year…
