The Dream of a Thousand Cats follows a kitten who, after her owners fall asleep and she is left alone, is taken to a cat colony run by a purebred Siamese. There the Siamese cat tells the group the story of his discovery of Dreaming and his encounter with the Cat of Dreams.
Unlike the rest of Sandman, The Dream of a Thousand Cats is imagined with stunning animation directed by Hisko Hulsing. The feline tale, in which Tom Sturridge plays the role of Dream, has gathered a star cast to bring the cats to life: Sandra Oh as “The Prophet”, Rosie Day as “The Tabby Cat”, David Gyasi as “The Grey Cat”, Joe Lycett as “The Black Cat”, Neil Gaiman as “Crow/Cat”, James McAvoy as “Golden Haired Man”, David Tennant as “Don”, Georgia Tennant as “Laura Lynn”, Michael Sheen as “Paul”, Anna Lundberg as “Marion”, Nonso Anozie as “Wyvern”, Diane Morgan as “Bird with a Grip” and Tom Wu as “Hippogriff”. ”
“We’ve strived to make the animated version of ‘A Thousand Cats Dream’ as mesmerizing and hypnotic as possible, using the magic of real oil paintings on canvas,” Hulsing said of the episode in a press release. “We combined the paintings with classically drawn 2D animation based on realistic 3D animation of telepathic cats to create a trippy, mundane and dreamlike world. London-based Untold Studios created the breathtaking 3D animation of the cats. The stunning 2D animation, oil paintings and stylization were created at Submarine Studios in Amsterdam.”
The two-part episode of Sandman is now available to watch on Netflix
The second part of the surprise new episode of The Sandman is titled Calliope and is about a muse who has a mysterious history with Morpheus. Directed by Louise Hooper, the episode stars Melissanthi Mahut as “Calliope”, Arthur Darvill as “Richard Madoc”, Nina Wadia as “Fate Mother”, Souad Faress as “Fate Crone”, Dinita Gohil as “Fate Maiden”, Kevin Harvey as “Larry”, Amita Suman as “Nora” and Derek Jacobi as “Erasmus Fry”.
For the first time, Sandman brings Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel from the seminal author to the big screen, introducing us to another world that awaits us all when we close our eyes and fall asleep – a place called Dreamworld, where Sandman, the Lord of Dreams (Tom Sturridge) gives form to our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dream world and the waking world forever.
The Sandman, starring Tom Sturridge, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Gwendoline Christie, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, Vivienne Acheampong, David Thewlis, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Asim Chaudhry, has been a massive hit since its release earlier this month.
The two-part bonus episode of Sandman: Prince of Dreams is now only available to stream on Netflix. Read a review of the series here.
