The Chinese tech giant holds the franchise’s future in its hands, so it’s not a bad idea to say that it’s better not to hope for a new instalment…

System Shock 3 has disappeared, and it is unlikely that it will ever return because it is not the same scenario as Dead Island 2 (the developer changed several times, but the Koch Media/Plaion, Deep Silver duo were behind it all along, and it returned eight years after the original announcement and even got a release date). Earlier this year, we heard from Warren Spector, the creator of System Shock, that OtherSide Entertainment had stopped working on System Shock 3 in 2019.

But what about Nightdive Studios? They’re working on a remake of the first System Shock (the development wasn’t easy there either), but they can’t tell us much more. Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick gave an interview to VGC, where he said that after Otherside Entertainment got the rights back from Starbreeze (who were so financially devastated by Overkill The Walking Dead that they still don’t have a positive balance sheet, despite having just given the rights to System Shock 3 back to the developers…), they then moved to another pair of hands::

“They then subsequently sold their rights to Tencent. So Tencent currently has the rights to the third game, and we have the rights to do the remake of the first game and potentially a remake of the second game. That’s pretty much where it stands right now. I think they could technically do 4 and 5, but they’d have to do 3 first. So, we’ll see,” Kick said.

At least Nightdive is trying to listen to what the original developers say. Spector and the other original creator, Paul Neurath, have been consulted throughout the System Shock remake development. It would be hard for the studio to be fairer than that (while Sony is making a film adaptation of Days Gone, they didn’t ask the game’s two creators about the main character; we wrote about that…).
