TECH NEWS – Google has patented a new system that uses facial recognition technology to show users a personalised content selection.
The geniuses (or supervillains?) at Google have created a system that will offer users a selection of content using facial recognition technology. Although still in the early stages of development, the company’s new technology could significantly impact gamers in the future.
The expansive technology company is constantly experimenting with different forms of media and developing new ways for its customers to consume media.
As was evident in the case of Google Stadia, some of these experiments will eventually fail. But despite the failure of Stadia, the prolific company has managed to find its way into the homes of millions of people.
But Google faces stiff competition from Apple, which is offering more and more media and devices for access. The technology company has developed its own system to avoid being left behind. This would further strengthen the link between users and the content they consume. Seeing a patent filed in August this year and published today, the company’s new technology would use facial recognition data to present each user with collections of content tailored to that individual. Users could then run the service that offers the selected range and immediately start or continue using it. The system would be able to store several different profiles. Each would have a pre-set face ID and a separate collection of content. The system could select from a predefined set of choices and present them to the user.
The newly patented technology appears to be designed to make the user experience as seamless as possible. The images in the documentation detail a system that could, for example, stream a TV show to a person who leaves one room and enters another using another connected device. The media is paused on the first device, and once the user’s face is identified on the second device, it can be resumed on the same device. The system also integrates the device’s microphone, allowing voice activation of the presented content. It even appears to display different options depending on the time of day.
Gamers should note that although the patent is primarily intended for television and movies, several mentions mention that the system could also be incorporated into game consoles.
Given the possibilities presented here, the Google Play Games in development and Google’s patent on video game guide overlays, it is clear that the company is still counting on gamers.
Despite a hopeful future for Google gamers, it’s no secret that the sudden shutdown of Stadia has hurt developers and gamers alike. With these new opportunities on the horizon, fans can only hope that the company will do better in the future.
