Dead Space Remake: New Side Quests; Isaac Has A More Prominent Role

We’ve also learned about the game’s resolution and frame rate targets for the console versions’ performance and quality modes.

Motive is behind the revamp of the legacy of the shuttered Visceral Games title, and previously, the developers have said it was done as if the script was done to voice Isaac Clarke, but it’s more than that: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. For the most part, it was all about leaving alone the beats that made the game so great and improving the problematic ones where we thought we could do better. Walking that line was often difficult, but we struck an outstanding balance.”

Also, for example, the roles of Nicole and Mercel, or the minor characters (Jacob Temple, Elizabeth Cross), have been enhanced. According to Joel MacMillan, Dead Space’s “realization director,” they were even given side missions, so we could get more detail behind the destruction of the Ishimura: “Right, it was important to give them more background, depth, and motivation, so the personal connections feel more meaningful. So, there are some very compelling threads the players can follow through these new side quests.”

Isaac has been thoroughly redesigned, as he will no longer be a silent figure who silently does everyone’s bidding without question. According to Roman Campos-Oriola, the creative director, he will now work with the other characters on solutions if he can use his engineering skills: “He’s now a bit more involved in events and solving problems. He’s part of the conversation. And that gives more depth to the character; it gives him more agency.”

MacMillan also told Inverse that they almost took the option to pause the game out of the Dead Space Remake but ultimately decided against it: “In horror games, you can pause and you have a moment of safety there. You can take a breath. And I think you get a reprieve from that. It deflates some of the tension. But with persistent online games, you’re playing with dozens of other people, and you can’t just pause everybody’s game. Removing that as a feature would make horror games far more impactful — You would truly feel like you’re never actually safe.”

Instead of the original 3D map of Dead Space, the remake will offer a 2D option with a New Game+ mode. Electronic Arts said on Twitter that the performance-focused performance mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will take the game down to 1440p resolution, running at 60 FPS. The quality option turns on ray tracing and runs at 4K, with 30 FPS. The game will be released on January 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
