According to Larian Studios, there is no console exclusivity deal for the RPG, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is still delayed on one console.

 

 

Baldur’s Gate 3 will not be avoiding the Xbox Series X/S. So there is no word of a console exclusivity deal with Sony for PlayStation 5. Instead, the Xbox version’s delay stems from a development issue regarding split-screen support on the Series S.

Developer Larian Studios has clarified the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on consoles after revealing at Sony’s State of Play event that the RPG is being developed for PS5.

“We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in development for some time now,” Larian Studios said in a statement.

“We’ve run into some technical issues in developing the Xbox port that have stopped us feeling 100% confident in announcing it until we’re certain we’ve found the right solutions – specifically, we’ve been unable to get splitscreen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, which is a requirement for us to ship.”

So Baldur’s Gate 3 has not ruled out a release on Xbox Series X/S. However, that’s still up in the air. Plus, this isn’t the first time people have complained about Series S. Studios have reportedly asked Microsoft to drop the Xbox Series S release requirement because it’s holding back games.

The performance gap between the Xbox Series X and Series S is quite significant. For example, the former has 12 teraflops compared to the Series S’s 4 teraflops. There is no similar problem with PS5 development.

For now, Baldur’s Gate 3 will arrive on August 31, 2023, for PS5 and PC – Larian notes that this includes Mac and GeForce Now.

The developer added that it “will announce support for additional platforms if and when we’re ready.” Microsoft has not yet commented on the news.
