MOVIE NEWS – Warner Bros. is working on a series for its new Max streaming service, based on one of the most popular contemporary horror franchises.

The hugely popular horror franchise of  The Conjuring is getting a series adaptation on Warner Bros.’ newly unified streaming service Max.

Based on the allegedly real-life research and experiences of parapsychologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, the Conjuring horror universe includes several blockbuster films, including two instalments of The Conjuring (2013, 2016) and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021).

It also includes three Annabelle films, The Curse of La Llorona and The Nun. The horror franchise has collectively grossed over $2 billion.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Television would produce a Conjuring series created by Peter Safran. James Wan, who directed the first two films in the franchise, is currently in talks to executive make the series, which will “continue the story established in the feature films”. The Conjuring franchise series opens up the opportunity to delve deeper into the history and legends of Ed and Lorraine’s paranormal investigation. They were first captured in Jay Anson’s novel The Amityville Horror, which was made into a successful 1979 film of the same name.

Their characters, played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, and their experiences and collections of occult artefacts in the more recent films add richness and depth to the story of the film franchise.

It seems the perfect world for episodic horror dedicated to various horror stories. The series has the potential to build on many of the spooky curiosities spotted in the Warrens’ house museum that has only been glimpsed in other films.

No word yet on who will be joining the cast of this intriguing series project. Presumably, the couple will also appear, perhaps in a younger form. It could build on that by tracing their beginnings and the history of their collections and records. Audiences will be eager to learn more about the new occult dangers and revisit some familiar horrors. So the series is likely to appeal to audiences.
