Venom’s secret identity has quickly become a meme in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, featuring both serious and comical villains from the Spider-Man universe (WARNING, we’re in spoiler-prone waters!)
A new, funny meme has emerged in the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 community about the unmasking of Venom. Over the years, the Venom symbiote has infected dozens of characters. Fans are having fun trying to solve this mystery for the game.
The origins of the meme date back to the 2023 Summer Game Fest: during the show, Insomniac came out to confirm the release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as well as a quick snippet that piqued the curiosity of the entire fanbase.
Insomniac’s Brian Horton confirmed that Venom would not be Eddie Brock in the game. He is, after all, the most popular character to wear the black symbiote. With this fact out, it’s only natural that Spider-Man fans are wondering who Venom could be.
The general theme of the meme is “anyone can be Venom”. Some suggestions are pretty practical. One such is Miles Morales’ main villain Simon Krieger. This theory makes a little sense, as Simon could plausibly turn to the symbiote to get revenge on Miles for putting him in prison. Others have suggested that Miles’ best friend, Ganke, could be Venom. This is highly unlikely but not inconceivable. Of course, some of these suggestions may seem far-fetched. Often whole backstories are created to justify the theory; for example, Ganke becomes so jealous and fed up being the “third wheel” that he seeks power.
The meme itself quickly gets out of hand when it comes to serious speculation, as many of the speculations are either random or cannot be taken seriously. Examples include Gloria Davila, the head of the F.E.A.S.T. homeless shelter, or the guy in the side mission of Marvel’s Spider-Man who dressed like the title character.
The funniest suggestion for Venom’s identity might be the bodega cat from the Marvel series Miles Morales – which, given that the symbiote can take on any shape is technically possible.
Gamers who have completed Marvel’s Spider-Man may already have an answer as to who Venom is. In a cut scene, after the credits rolled, Norman Osborne was helping his son Harry Osborne in a tank of water, where parts of Harry’s body were covered in black matter. Thanks to this scene, there is a strong chance that Harry is Venom, but players won’t know for sure until this year.
