MOVIE NEWS – Cillian Murphy, star of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, talks about going to the cinema to see Greta Gerwig’s Barbie…
Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy is keen to talk about whether he’ll go to the cinema to see rival film Barbie. Christopher Nolan’s historical epic about the creation of the first atomic bomb and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Mattel’s iconic doll couldn’t be more different on paper. But they have one thing in common: the release date. The common release date has since created both a rivalry between the two separate films, but also a celebration. Both under the broader umbrella term “Barbenheimer”.
Now, ahead of Barbie and Oppenheimer’s release later this month, Murphy, who plays the titular American theoretical physicist, told IGN that he would indeed see Gerwig’s film in cinemas.
Murphy won’t just be seeing Barbie in cinemas. As he reveals in the video below, shared on Twitter. But the star is very enthusiastic about the current state of the cinema. Check out Murphy’s full comment below!
“I mean, I’ll be going to see Barbie 100% – I can’t wait to see it. I think it’s just great for the industry and for audiences that we have two amazing films by amazing filmmakers coming out on the same day. You can spend a whole day in the cinema. What’s better than that?”
The two films have been pitted against each other only because they share a release date (which Nolan is reportedly unhappy about, as the apparent feud between Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. continues). However, both films represent a solid return to Hollywood cinema. After several years of not many films being released in the summer due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the summer movie season is now back in full swing.
Barbie is predicted to overtake Oppenheimer in their joint opening weekend, which is not really surprising given the latter’s R rating, theme and running time.
However, Oppenheimer is still expected to do well. It will probably stand on strong legs. In addition, AMC Theaters recently revealed that they have sold over 20,000 tickets for a double bill of Barbie and Oppenheimer. This means audiences are clearly willing to take in both films rather than just one. Ultimately, as Murphy suggests, both films together will make for a great weekend at the cinema.
