PlayStation 5 At Almost 42 Million; Does The Mid-Gen Upgrade Make Sense?

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is doubtful that the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X should be repeated. Meanwhile, Sony has published its quarterly (April-June) financial report.

Let’s start with the official figures. Recently, Sony announced that PlayStation 5 has already passed the 40 million mark but shipped 41.7 million units as of June 30, an increase of 0.9 million compared to last year. The PlayStation Network had 108 million monthly active users as of the last day of June, an increase of 5 million. PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games sold 56.5 million copies in the quarter, an increase of 9.3 million. Of the 56.5 million, 6.6 million were internally developed, first-party games (an unchanged result from last year!). 72% of sales were digital, i.e., PlayStation Store, and that’s down 7% from last year.

Sony did not disclose data on PlayStation Plus subscribers. It’s probably an embarrassing drop for Sony, and they prefer to hide the statistics because they announce the number every quarter. Sony’s shame will make it difficult for the company to deny it. If they could provide the monthly active user figure, they would also know the three-tier subscription figures.

Let us turn to Zelnick’s comment. He told IGN that he doesn’t see much point in the PlayStation 5 Pro or any mid-generation console upgrade. It depends on what the new products offer, and he doesn’t think they’ve brought much change so far. In May, he believed that Sony and Microsoft were also preparing such a console. We’ve already reported on rumors of a PlayStation 5 Pro, but the Redmond-based firm is said to be looking at a digital Xbox Series X, plus more new hardware in 2025.

So Sony is moving ahead as fast as it can, and Microsoft may well repeat the Xbox 360 success story: that console was launched in 2005, a year before the PlayStation 3, and the X360 led the way for most of that generation…
