PS5, PS4 Function Will be Discontinued from November 13!

One major feature that was a staple of both PS4 and PS5 will disappear from both consoles on November 13th.

Beginning November 13, PlayStation users will lose access to their consoles’ Twitter integration, preventing them from posting new content directly from the console, or accessing clips, screenshots, and trophy notifications already uploaded to the service. However, Sony has clarified that PS5 users will be able to use the PS application to upload and share content, and PS4 users will be able to do the same through the SHAREfactory application.

The move by PlayStation consoles comes nearly seven months after Xbox removed Twitter integration. This change was due to API changes introduced by Twitter’s Elon Musk, and these changes would cost large companies like Sony and Microsoft nearly $42,000 per month to access Twitter’s API functionality. It was this API that allowed console users to freely share their gameplay clips and screenshots. As a result, reactions to changes to Twitter API access have been overwhelmingly negative.

Starting November 13th, PS4 and PS5 users will no longer be able to upload videos and screenshots to Twitter directly from their consoles. However, Sony has given users some workarounds to upload their clips to the service. According to PlayStation, PS5 users will be able to upload their clips, screenshots and trophies to the cloud, which can then be accessed through the PlayStation mobile app. Users can use their smartphones to download content from the PS app to their device and then upload it to Twitter. Clips and screenshots stay in the cloud for up to 14 days and do not require a PlayStation Plus subscription to use them.

Users can upload media manually through the PS5’s Media Gallery or turn on automatic uploading when the console is in sleep mode and connected to the internet. Content can only be uploaded to the cloud if the resolution is set to 1080p and if a video is no longer than three minutes. PS4 users can use the SHAREfactory app instead, or transfer their content to a connected USB drive for later use on another device. With Black Friday just around the corner and the rumored release of PS5 bundles, the removal of Twitter integration was met with apathy on social media. Some users cited the PlayStation App workaround as the reason for the reaction.

With Twitter integration removed from the PS4 and PS5, the Nintendo Switch is the only current console that still has this feature. Only time will tell if this will change in the future or not.
