MOVIE NEWS – Din Djarin’s journey in season 3 of The Mandalorian is more than redemption, and Pedro Pascal’s explanation is a very exciting foretaste of season 4.
Pedro Pascal perfectly explained Din Djarin’s journey in The Mandalorian Season 3, making the next season even more exciting. Set in the New Republic era, The Mandalorian has now spawned a spin-off series. These further built the overarching narrative of the Imperial remnant and a new threat emerging in a galaxy far, far away. To that end, Pascal confirmed that Din Djarin’s journey in Season 3 was much more than a redemption story. Moreover, he has a fascinating role planned for him in the 4th season of The Mandalorian.
Pedro Pascal already hinted at Din’s spiritual journey before Season 3
In an interview with StarWars.com in March 2023 (right when The Mandalorian Season 3 began airing), Pedro Pascal revealed what audiences can expect from Din Djarin in the new season:
“We know what Din wants: Din wants back in. He wants back into Mandalore. And what his heart needs is Grogu. It’s an interesting conflict that he steps into as far as the third season is concerned, trying to sort of understand and regain his identity in the middle of a world that introduces us to a lot more as far as Mandalore is concerned.”
As The Mandalorian season 3 ended, Pedro’s comments were confirmed. Djarin did redeem himself by bathing in the pools of the Beskar mines in Mandalore and officially accepting Grogu as the way of Mandalore.
However, Din Djarin’s journey was much more than redemption. Instead of just picking up where he left off, Djarin indeed embarked on a journey of self-discovery. In order to “understand and regain his identity,” as Pascal described it, he tried to figure out what his new purpose and mission was in this new chapter of his life.
Din Djarin felt lost in Season 3
Although Din Djarin redeemed himself, the titular Mandalorian did not know what else he was called to do beyond that. The events of The Mandalorian Season 3 are pivotal to his character. Because they showed Din what he wanted and also what he didn’t want. However, Djarin has felt chiefly lost in this most recent season. And this was clearly intentional.
To that end, Djarin’s new purpose serves as a critical element of the upcoming Mandalorian Season 4, which is reportedly set to begin production soon.
In the past, Din Djarin was simply a bounty hunter who worked to support himself and his team. Of course, the whole status quo changed once he found Grogu. Ultimately, he became rich with the legendary Darksaber and the right to rule over Mandalore itself. While The Mandalorian Season 2 gave Djarin a clear mission to redeem himself after taking off his helmet, it makes sense that Djarin was then lost and searching for a new identity for the rest of The Mandalorian Season 3 after reuniting with his family.
By following Bo-Katan, Din also found his way back
When exploring Din Djarin’s journey of self-discovery in The Mandalorian Season 3, Bo-Katan Kryze’s (Katee Sackhoff) role is invaluable. Although Din Djarin became the new wielder of the Darksaber in The Mandalorian Season 2, by the final episodes of Season 3, he understood that the position of leader and ruler was not for him.
That’s why he renounced the Darksaber and returned it to her, as seen in The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 6, knowing full well that the power that came with the legendary blade was not something he desired.
This is one of the biggest examples of Djarin’s search for identity that we can see in The Mandalorian Season 3. There has been heavy speculation that Djarin will rule as the next Mandalorian. But relinquishing power was a critical moment that closed the door on possibility, instead opening new avenues for the future. He offered his support to Bo-Katan and convinced his sect to help liberate their home planet. Djarin knew that Bo-Katan was better suited to remain on Mandalore to help lead and rebuild Mandalorian civilization under the New Republic. Also effectively freeing Djarin himself for future adventures with his new son.
What could be The Mandalorian’s new goal…?
By the season 3 finale of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin knows much more about who he is and what he does in the Star Wars galaxy. After his redemption, Djarin also regained his identity. In doing so, he practically made good on Pedro Pascal’s teases at the beginning of the season. Not only was he reunited with his fellow Mandalorians, but also with his officially adopted son. They have their own land in Nevarro.
Additionally, Din Djarin is now performing his bounty hunting duties “for a better cause,” as seen in the last episode.
Agreeing to work for the New Republic’s Carson Teva and the Adelphi Rangers, Djarin is now hunting Imperial warlords and remnants. With Grogu on his side, this essentially guarantees that Djarin will continue to play an essential role in the New Republic era. Especially now that Grand Admiral Thrawn has returned from his exile to another galaxy, as we saw at the end of Ahsoka. However, Din Djarin’s new purpose and mission heading into The Mandalorian Season 4 could only come about by following this journey of self-discovery in The Mandalorian Season 3.
