Starsky & Hutch Actor David Soul Has Died at the Age of 80

CINEMA NEWS – Actor David Soul, best known for Starsky & He is known for his role in the television series Hutch. His wife, Helen Snell, said he died on Thursday “after a heroic fight for life in the loving company of his family”. The American-born actor was best known for his role as Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson in Starsky & In the classic law enforcement series Hutch. The series, which ran from 1975 to 1979, starred Paul Michael Glaser. He and Glaser’s Starsky & They reprized their roles in the 2004 remake of Hutch, starring Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch.

Stiller paid tribute to Soul by reposting a clip from the original TV series on X (formerly Twitter) with the message: “Defining ’70s cool. Rest in peace.” Soul was also known for her roles in Here Come The Brides, Magnum Force, The Yellow Rose and Salem’s Lot.

Author Stephen King, who wrote the horror novel on which Salem’s Lot is based, said he was “saddened” to learn of Soul’s death.

He has appeared in several British television shows including Holby City, Little Britain and Lewis. He received British citizenship in 2004. But she turned down the opportunity and the lucrative pay to star in reality shows, telling the Sunday Times: “Anyone can be a celebrity these days and there’s nothing to celebrate, frankly.”

The actor and singer, who was married five times, was arrested in the 1980s for assaulting his then-wife Patti Carnel Sherman, who was seven months pregnant at the time. It was his first offense and the charges against him were dropped after he completed a probationary diversion program. Soul later spoke of remorse and visited prisons to talk to inmates about domestic violence.

Born David Solberg on August 28, 1943 in Chicago, he spent his childhood between South Dakota and post-World War II Berlin.

His father, Dr. Richard Solberg, a professor of history and political science and an ordained minister, moved them to Berlin, where he was a counselor for religious affairs at the American High Commission. Before making a name for himself as an actor, Soul began his professional career as a folk singer, warming up audiences for stars such as Frank Zappa, the Byrds and the Lovin’ Spoonful. His interest in music began as a teenager in Mexico, where his father was a professor at a college for young diplomats. There he befriended a group of radical students who gave him a guitar and taught him the songs of the Mexican indigenous people.

Returning to the US, he played these songs around Minneapolis with some success – but it wasn’t until he donned a mask and hid his face that his career really took off. He was signed by the William Morris agency as “The Covered Man” and appeared on television talk shows, including multiple appearances on the hit Merv Griffin show.

However, when she decided to take off the mask and reveal herself, the bookings dried up and she turned to acting instead. Soul appeared in Star Trek, Here Come The Brides, Perry Mason and Johnny Got His Gun in the 1960s and 1970s. His acting breakthrough came as Constable John Davis in Clint Eastwood’s police drama Magnum Force, about Inspector Harry Callahan, which led to Starsky & For a role in Hutch.

Later, Starsky & After the success of Hutch, he returned to music, releasing four albums of soft rock ballads in the late 1970s. These spawned two UK chart-topping singles, Silver Lady and Don’t Give Up On Us, which were snapped up by fans of her TV personality.

A 1977 New York Times review of his first post-fame concert described “teenage girls brandishing cameras storming the stage”, “amid the flashing of hundreds of exploding flash tubes and constant shrieks”. The enthusiasm died down after his arrest and withdrawal, and he recorded just one album after that – 1997’s self-released Leave a Light On.

Soul was married five times, to actresses Sherman, Mirriam Solberg, Karen Carlson, and Julia Nickson, among others, and had six children. She met Snell while performing in the play Deathtrap, when she was doing audience relations for the play and calld her his “soul mate”.
