MOVIE NEWS – The director can make his dream come true; he can also make an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sequel novel, Dune Messiah in Dune 3.
Sometimes, dreams come true. This is as true for Paul Atreides as it is for Denis Villeneuve, who can now make Dune 3! Legendary confirmed Thursday that they are currently working on a third film in the sci-fi franchise based on Frank Herbert’s original novels. Villeneuve is also in talks to adapt Annie Jacobsen’s non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario, which follows.
Villeneuve first said in 2021 that his intention all along was to make three Dune movies: Dune: Part Two completed his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s original 1965 sci-fi novel, but Herbert wrote five sequels before he died in 1986 (his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have since expanded the franchise with several additional books).
Villeneuve wants to adapt Herbert’s first sequel, the 1969 book The Dune Messiah, for the third film in the series.
“I always envisioned three movies,” Villeneuve told Entertainment Weekly then. “It’s not that I want to do a franchise, but this is Dune, and Dune is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies. That would be the dream. To follow Paul Atreides and his full face would be nice.”
Why is it essential to complete Dune 3?
Paul’s story isn’t over yet. In fact, it’s just starting to unfold! Dune Messiah picks up a few years after the end of Dune, when Paul is even more powerful than before. But now he is threatened by a mysterious conspiracy. The story introduces new intergalactic factions, such as the Tleilaxu, advanced biologists who have developed cloning technology and employ shape-shifting spies called “Face Dancers”.
Perhaps we can also see here Villeneuve’s interpretation of the Spacing Guild navigators, who control the interstellar routes of spaceships with the help of molasses at the cost of intense mutation.
Guild navigators are also prominently featured in David Lynch’s film Dune. But they haven’t appeared in the new movies yet. One of them plays an important role in the messianic events of The Dune.
In Dune 3, the characters that the viewers only met in Dune: Part Two will play essential roles. For example, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) and Paul’s sister Alia (Anya Taylor-Joy). Also, the story of the growing disenchantment between Chani (Zendaya) and House Atreides continues.
