The Belgian studio has prepared for actions in their game that not many would do in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it shows how sophisticated a product they put out last year.

On YouTube, Proxy Gate Tactician showed just how extreme Larian had come up with. In the video, the Iron Throne and Steel Watch Foundry dungeons take center stage, along with the Netherstones. The stones are the equivalent of Zelda’s Triforce: you need all three to start the end of the game. Larian doesn’t restrict us, though, so they don’t stay in your inventory, but can be removed at any time. However, if you throw one of them into a pit, for example, a soft lock happens and you get a unique game-over scene and you turn into an Illithid as a result.

The video asks if there are reactions to losing stones in a more concrete way. For example, what would happen if they were left in a dungeon that you can only go to once in the game? This is the case with the Underwater Iron Throne, which must be completed in time before it explodes. Surprisingly, there is no instant game over and no soft lock! Larian has created a special mini-quest to find the lost stones! They always appear in the southeastern docks of Lower City, but the details vary depending on your actions.

One is with Sahuagin by default if they raid the area while we are at the docks. If you kill them, a fishmonger, Old Troutman (who has no effect on the game by default), will sell them for a song. If we killed him somehow, we would find the stones in a dead fish that washed ashore. So there is no way we can get there by accidentally running into a dead end because of the stones.

But that’s not all: Baldur’s Gate 3 will also give you a unique reaction if you leave the stones on the ground of the Steel Watch Foundry before it explodes. A bunch of goblins will appear south of the factory, and one of them will pick the stones out of the rubble. We have to kill them in five rounds or we get the typical unique game-over.
