Battle.net Doesn’t Disappear, It Will Just Transform

Blizzard will change its Battle.net service.

Battle.net was already used by the first Diablo game (!), but Blizzard decided to transition away from this name. Don’t worry; the service won’t be shut down, but we will have to bid adieu to Battle.net. Instead, the services will be called Blizzard […]. The transition has already begun, as Blizzard Streaming and Blizzard Voice are the first services to be already rechristened.

The reasoning is that „there has been occasional confusion and inefficiencies related to having a single name for something that represents multiple things.” „Given that built-in multiplayer support is a well-understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn’t as much of a need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology.”

The change will happen in the next few months. We might see 2017 with the name Battle.net only in our memories!
