Sony Surprised Microsoft By Not Including A 4K Blu-Ray Player In PlayStation 4 Pro

Xbox‘s lead planner was surprised by their rivals’ step.

Albert Penello didn’t think that Sony would choose streaming over implementing a 4K Blu-ray player in the PlayStation 4 Pro. (Still, Microsoft took this move to jab at them with the Xbox One S and the upcoming Project Scorpio.)

In his interview with The Guardian, Penello said the following: „I don’t want to bait any console war, I have a lot of respect for what Sony does, but analytically, I think they made some interesting decisions in their product that surprised me. The lack of a 4K disc player, given Sony’s media background, was a surprise. Looking at what they’ve done historically, I don’t think many people would have predicted that.”

Sony decided to drop the 4K drive for a lower price, and we have yet to see how their risky move pays off. While technologically, 4K is the next step, but the events of the next two years could change everything. (The launch of the PS4 Pro, the appearance of Xbox One Project Scorpio, and the capabilities of the Nintendo NX.)
