Strange Request From The Director Of Overwatch

It’s highly unlikely that the two companies will heed his word…

Jeff Kaplan said on the Battle.net forums that Blizzard is objecting the usage of keyboard and mouse on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the team-based FPS which has over 25 million players, potentially because players can aim much easier with these devices in comparison to the gameplay with only a controller.

„We have contacted both first-party console manufacturers and expressed our concern about the use of mouse and keyboard and input conversion devices. We have lobbied and will continue to lobby for first-party console manufacturers to either disallow mouse and keyboard and input conversion devices or openly and easily support mouse and keyboard for all players. I encourage you to reach out to the hardware manufacturers and express your concerns (but please do so in a productive and respectful way),” Kaplan said.

However, he forgot something. The PlayStation 4 supports the keyboard and mouse natively in things such as the Internet browser, and developers can choose to support these devices in their games. Microsoft is shifting towards cross-buy and cross-play with the Xbox Play Anywhere program, so it seems unlikely on their end to stop supporting them.

Perhaps Overwatch players shouldn’t be divided by their method of inputs – what about cross-play between the PS4, X1, and PC? Blizzard seems keen to be able to detect and ban input converters…
