Activision is gearing up for one (or possibly TWO) markets.
Activision has struck a deal with Tencent to get Call of Duty a mobile game in China. It is going to be a free-to-play, first-person action title with a launch in the next few months, and it will „bring together a collection of beloved Call of Duty characters, maps, modes and weapons from across the franchise.” The development is handled by Tencent‘s Timi studio, who recently worked on the Chinese mobile adaptation of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds called PUBG: Army Attack. (Lightspeed & Quantum Studios made the Western version!)
We have to mention two things. First, it’s the second time Activision is dealing with Tencent, as they already launched Call of Duty Online in 2015, which is a free-to-play shooter in China on PC. Also, this Call of Duty game is unrelated to the one that King has been making for the past year. (Yes, the same King that was responsible for Candy Crush and is now part of the Activision Blizzard conglomerate!)
So, it’s Tencent that shows up once again. We’ve been saying that this is a company that slowly gains traction in the West – they even bought stakes in Ubisoft, too!
