The DS is still the most successful console in the company’s history, but there are some surprises here as well.
It’s almost unbelievable, but Nintendo is making consoles for more than three decades now. Through this time they made many regular and handheld consoles too and some of them very very successful, some of them very moderately successful and there are some that we almost can’t remember at all.
Nintendo’s IR site published some interesting details regarding the consoles made by the company in the past 35 years – more specifically, how many units have been sold from each of them since their release. A little bit more than 300 million were sold from home consoles, while handhelds were more successful overall with much more than 400 million units. Overall, Nintendo has sold more than 727 million consoles so far.
By the way, the DS is still the most successful console Nintendo has ever made with more than 150 million sales but does anyone remember the Virtual Boy? The chances are slim because less than a million was sold from it. The full list can be seen on Nintendo’s official website.
