If Sony‘s idea becomes a reality, we might bid farewell to those players in multiplayer games who are lagging on purpose…
On Twitter, a new patent filed by Sony has shown up. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s patent is about a method for „detecting lag switch cheating in a game,” which would make Sony’s job easier to ban these cheaters on the PlayStation Network. For example, imagine if you play an FPS, and you encounter someone who suddenly starts to lag. It makes their character appear randomly in one spot, then in another, usually resulting in your character’s death. This is an example of someone who „lag switches.”
This method would be a significant step ahead in online gaming. If Sony makes it possible to detect the players who tamper with their Internet connection on purpose, then Microsoft, Nintendo (and possibly Valve as well via Steam) could take notes. We’re looking forward to an exciting future…
