After Starbreeze has fallen on its knees due to its financial situation, it sold back its publishing rights of System Shock 3 to the developers, and OtherSide continues to work on the game without a publisher behind them…
OtherSide has become independent once again, and at the moment, Warren Spector, a veteran game developer who has been a pivotal person in the creation of System Shock, is also working with them. He gave an interview to VGC, where he said that there is a lot of interest from other publishers to pick System Shock 3 up:
„We don’t have a deal right now, but luckily OtherSide is flush enough that we’re funding ourselves and can continue to do that for quite a while. Let’s see what happens. We need somebody to say, ‘Yeah, let’s talk deal terms,’ and we’re in that kind of discussion with some folks. But we’re not quite finished yet. The reality is, OtherSide is a company of developers who want to develop games. We don’t particularly want to be a publisher. [OtherSide founder] Paul Neurath and I have worked with publishers before, Origin self-published when I was there, and we don’t want to get into the market of distributing stuff. We’re not ruling anything out, but at this point, we’re looking for a publishing and funding partner,” Spector said. He added that if they had to self-publish, it would be a „huge distraction,” and they’d have to hire more people.
OtherSide Entertainment has to restore its name after their latest game, Underworld: Ascendant, being… far from a quality title. Perhaps this is the reason why they don’t tell us when System Shock 3 will launch – we’re close to the point where we could expect the game to show up on the next-gen platforms, but the PC, the PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One seem the most realistic options at the moment.
