Why Will There Be No Traditional Deathmatch In Doom Eternal? [VIDEO]

An id Software game without a traditional multiplayer mode? If we said that twenty years ago, John Carmack would have been crucified for that…

Marty Stratton, Doom Eternal‘s executive producer, revealed their change in approach to multiplayer to IGN: „[There will be] no traditional multiplayer mode. [The] Battle Mode is our primary multiplayer mode. The cool thing about it is it’s ripped straight from Doom; it’s the combat players want and love, you’re familiar with the gameplay, playing as a Slayer. When you look back to Doom 2016, we kind of did something more traditional. Skill vs skill twitch vs twitch. It didn’t have any of the components of Doom that people loved from the campaign. It didn’t have the slayer or demons in a meaningful way. It just kind of fell flat so we really flipped the script on it and decided we need to develop this internally, we need to pull it from what Doom is all about, demons vs slayer.” So they thought the multiplayer part was way too different from the single-player half of Doom 2016. This is why Battle Mode, where two demons will fight against a Doom Slayer, will be in Doom Eternal.

„We couldn’t figure out a way of introducing another slayer to the experience without it just becoming twitch skills vs twitch skills, which is what we did last time. If we go head to head as two slayers – if your twitch skills are better than mine, I can’t overcome that. But with demons, I can overcome someone’s twitch skills with strategy and teamwork, and in that was the spark,” Hugo Martin, the creative director, added.

A YouTube user by the name Szczebrzeszyniarz Brzeczyszczyczmoszyski (we copy-pasted that – let’s just say it’s too Polish for us) has had a clever idea. He recreated the E3 2019 Doom Eternal trailer… in DOOM II! Sure, he used a few mods for it, but it’s understandable. He even created a side-by-side comparison with the original trailer. You can check out both videos below.

Doom Eternal is out on November 22 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
