Is The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Getting A Sequel Next Year?

Nintendo has previously hinted that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was one of the best games of 2017 (available on the Nintendo Wii U as its last, and on the Nintendo Switch as its first major [launch] title, respectively), is getting a sequel, although the big N did not say when it could happen.

„I would tell you The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 is planned to release in 2020, but Zelda release dates are historically delayed, internally or publicly. LOL. This isn’t speculation, just current plans,” Sabi, a reliable leaker, wrote on Twitter, citing internal, insider information.

This seems plausible: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was in development for several years, yes, but it was because it was a new design approach, plus it used a new engine. (Plus it was also in development for two platforms.) However, these shouldn’t take much time with a sequel, as those aspects of the game should be good to go (or they are ready to be improved further). Not to mention that it would be developed for one platform only (as we do not consider the September-launched, million+ unit-selling Nintendo Switch Lite a separate one!). Also, there was previously a rumour before the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening that a 2D Zelda would drop in 2019, and a 3D one would follow in 2020.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, though, and it’s been rare that a Zelda game got a number 2 in its sequel’s title (it happened three decades ago on the Famicom Disk System, Famicom, NES, though). If Is The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 does drop in 2020, it could divert attention from the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Project Scarlett.
