The Next-Gen Consoles Won’t Impact The Nintendo Switch Sales

According to the American NPD Group’s surveys, the Nintendo Switch will continue to be a highly successful console even with the launch of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X by the end of the year.

Mat Piscatella, an analyst at the NPD Group, wrote in a now-deleted tweet (…?) the following: „According to our PlayerPulse surveys, over 40% of Switch owners in the United States also own a PlayStation 4 and/or an Xbox One. The Switch isn’t a substitute to PlayStation or Xbox, it’s supplemental. I don’t see next-gen hardware launches having a meaningful direct cannibalistic impact on Switch sales in 2020.” In other words, Piscatella believes the market will be capable of holding three consoles without significant shrinking in the market, so the Switch could finish behind the new PlayStation and Xbox initially (because new hardware gets a lot of initial attention). However, the long-time sales will be more important: remember, even the PlayStation Vita had a respectable launch, and look where it ended up. (And Piscatella thinks the Switch could be a market leader even into 2022…)

Yesterday, we wrote about what Serkan Toto, the analyst at Kantan Games, wrote: we’re not going into detail, but he believes we might see the launch of a stronger Switch model this year, capable of supporting 4K. „Nintendo Switch has been the US market leader all year, and will finish as the only console platform showing year-on-year growth.” Piscatella wasn’t wrong about it. „While Switch growth has been able to offset some of those declines in 2019, in 2020 we’re likely not to see that trend continue. All in-market hardware should see declines throughout 2020. Accessories and new full game software sales could also decline during this period, at least until new console hardware arrives.” That prediction sounds about right.

The Switch is in the box seat for now.
