Sacha Baron Cohen accuses Facebook of spreading Nazi propaganda

MOVIE NEWS – During the 77th edition of the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais did what everyone expected of him: to distribute firewood , but there were certain issues that remained in the inkwell and also deserved a good soup. This is the case of Mark Zuckerberg , who was recently forced to appear in Congress to respond to accusations that the Republican Party had paid Facebook for including false information that would discredit Democrat Joe Biden . At the time , Aaron Sorkin was in charge of criticizing the businessman, and now, from Beverly Hilton, it is Sacha Baron Cohen‘s turn.

The actor and humorist was nominated for his role in the Netflix miniseries The Spy , and took the stage to present the nomination of Jojo Rabbit , directed by Taika Waititi , as Best Comedy or Musical Movie. It was then that he launched the pulla: “The hero of the next film is a naive and disoriented boy who distributes Nazi propaganda and only has imaginary friends. His name is Mark Zuckerberg… Oh no, wait, this was the introduction for the year of The Social Network, ”he added among the applause of the public.

It is not the first time that Baron Cohen has positioned himself publicly against Facebook, since in November 2019 his intervention in an Anti-Defamation League event was very commented, where he expressed concern about the drift of social networks. “I’m just a comedian and an actor, not an academic,” he began. “But there is something that I am clear about. All that hatred and violence are facilitated by internet companies that have become the greatest propaganda machines in history. ”

“Think about it. Facebook, YouTube, Google, Twitter and others … reach millions of people, ”he continued. “The algorithms of these platforms depend on deliberately amplifying the content to which users feel linked: content that appeals to our most basic instincts of rage and fear. It’s time for us to rethink social networks and worry about how they expand hatred, conspiracies and lies. ”9, a speech of strong criticism to social networks where Zuckerberg was one of the main targets.
