The Coronavirus Defeated 2020’s Last Remaining Major Video Game Exhibitions

Nothing else remained that is a large event. The coronavirus won by knockout.

CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association), the organisers of the Tokyo Game Show, announced that TGS 2020, which would have been held between September 24 and 27 in Makuhari Messe, Chiba, is cancelled. Instead, CESA decided to go for an online, digital version, which will get its first details announced in late May.

„Tokyo Game Show 2020 […] is now planned to take place online. It is organized by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA, Chairman: Hideki Hayakawa) and co-organized by Nikkei Business Publications, Inc. (President & CEO: Naoto Yoshida) and Dentsu Inc. (Representative Director: Hiroshi Igarashi).

Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation. […]”, their message reads.

S.E.L.L. (Syndicat des Editeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs), the organisers of Paris Games Week, have also announced that this year’s PGW is cancelled. It would have run between October 23 and 27. „Dear players, it is with great emotion that we have made the difficult decision to cancel Paris Games Week, initially scheduled from 23rd to 27th October and which would have marked our 10th anniversary. The current context and the necessary anticipation of both the technical and logistical complexities of an event such as Paris Games Week have led us to cancel this edition. This year should have been special, with a line-up full of new releases, and an anniversary edition which we were thrilled to celebrate with you. We are going to work with all the industry players to enable us all to live our passion. We are already preparing next year’s edition and are looking forward to seeing you again,” their message reads.

E3, Gamescom, Taipei Game Show, Tokyo Game Show, Game Developers Conference, Paris Games Week – every event got defeated in their original (physical) format this year. And at a bad year, too: this year would mark the launch of the next console generation with the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.
