PlayStation 5: No Delays Due To Coronavirus, Too Early To Judge Marketing

Sony says the coronavirus global pandemic did not interrupt the company’s plans.

The company has talked about its forecasts for the current fiscal year that started on April 1. Sony reiterated the PlayStation 5 comes this holiday season, and there are no delays with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s first-party titles, nor regarding its partners’ games. Let’s see the full statement:

„Although there has been a slight impact on the production of PlayStation 4 hardware due to issues in the component supply chain, demand in the short-term is being addressed with current inventory and sales are trending well. Sales of game software that is downloaded from the network, as well as PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now (PS Now) subscriber numbers, have significantly increased.

Regarding the launch of PlayStation 5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to the part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season. At this point, major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s first-party studios or its partners’ studios.” We wrote about the increased subscription/PlayStation Store purchase data they mentioned yesterday.

During the fiscal earnings report, Sony also held a Q&A session for the investors. Takashi Mochizuki, a Bloomberg journalist, wrote the following on Twitter: „Question: Some say the PlayStation 5’s promotion is falling behind Xbox Series X’. Would you give a passing score to what the PlayStation team has done? Answer: We consider things strategically but doing our best. As for pass or fail, I would wait for the PlayStation 5’s sales [data] to make that judgement.” The person who answered the question was Hiroki Totoki, the chief financial officer of Sony Corporation.

We don’t know when Sony plans to officially reveal the PlayStation 5, but rumours say it could happen either on June 4 or early-to-mid June. The console will arrive this Holiday season.
