PlayStation 5: Sony Will Release Two Models This Year [VIDEO]

The company will follow Microsoft’s example with the PlayStation 5, which got its design revealed yesterday.

During PlayStation 5: The Future of Gaming, Sony has finally showcased how its next-gen console will look like. Sony also revealed its strategy: they will take Microsoft’s strategy, as the PlayStation 5 will come in two editions: the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition will contain an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, while the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will lack one, just like how the Xbox One S has an All-Digital Edition. There are some differences between the two consoles’ design, but they mostly look the same.

„With the PlayStation 5, we are making a significant leap to deliver a truly new generation of transformative play experiences that will redefine expectations for what games can be. The [game] worlds will be richer and more beautiful, they’ll captivate your senses in ways you didn’t think possible, and you’ll be able to experience them much more seamlessly, with lightning-fast loading. Today’s showcase is just a glimpse of what’s to come in the next generation, and we want to thank our community for taking this journey to PS5’s launch with us,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan in a press release.

So now the ball is in Microsoft’s court: Sony did not reveal the price for either version, so the Redmond-based company might do so in July during their event (where they will showcase the Xbox Game Studios titles in development). This move might also confirm a possible August event for Sony, too, where they could announce how much the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will cost. The images show some peripherals: a charging dock for the DualSense, a camera, a Pulse 3D wireless headset, and a remote controller.

In defence of the digital version: the physical/retail and the digital (PlayStation Store) sales’ ratio is nearly 50-50… and if the digital edition of the PlayStation 5 is cheaper, the loss could be brought back via PlayStation Store sales, as the profit margin is higher there.
