Laura Miele, Electronic Arts‘ chief studios officer, told Gamesindustry how the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will be a big jump.
„Historically, console transitions have been punctuated by increased graphic fidelity and that hasn’t changed – this next generation of games will certainly take a visual leap – but we are also taking advantage of the extra memory and CPU cycles to bring a lot more detail to life,” Miele says. Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will have a CPU based on AMD’s Ryzen 2 Zen processor.
She brought up the example of Madden NFL, saying that the next-gen titles of the American football series will have the stadiums full of unique fans that will respond to every action that happens on the playing field. (In other words, they won’t be paper maché crowds, like in older FIFA games. FIFA 21 on the PC got the short end of the stick, and we have explained today why.) „Deferred rendering allows us to use colours and lights in more dynamic ways and dynamic weather systems will impact the athletes, their equipment and the playing field. Games are going to feel different, better and more visceral,” she added.
Miele also praised how the developers at Electronic Arts’ studios managed to quickly change to working from home: „If you had told me four months ago that we could shift our entire global workforce to working from home, I would have said it was either impossible or that it would take us a year to plan for it. We got everyone home and operational in a matter of days and I’m blown away by what our teams have accomplished,” she said.
So Electronic Arts is surprised how working from home is possible. However, not everything can be done in the home office – the voice acting is one example, as it needs a recording studio booth.
