EA would put more emphasis on Star Wars titles, Battlefront sold well

In 2013, EA acquired exclusive license to the Star Wars franchise. EA’s performance in adapting the series to videogames seemed mostly semi-successful so far. Star Wars Battlefront was launched too early, Battlefront II was characterized by a relentlessly aggressive monetization policy (until it eventually became a good game), and long-awaited projects such as Amy Hennig and Visceral Games’ Uncharted-like Star Wars adventure game was simply cancelled. After that, many wanted the legendary franchise’s rights to be taken from EA.

Nonetheless, in recent years, EA has turned things around a lot, luring players back to Star Wars: Battlefront II with a lot of quality free updates, and if that wasn’t enough, gamers got what they’ve been waiting for a long time: a story-driven action-adventure in the form of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This year’s Star Wars: Squadrons should only build on recent successes. Well, apparently it’s all just the beginning, as EA director Andrew Wilson promised in a discussion with investors that they will pay much more attention to Star Wars in the future.

„We have a tremendous relationship with Disney. We have a tremendous relationship with Lucas. We have a longstanding relationship with them going all the way back to Star Wars The Old Republic that we launched in 2011. We’ve had success in first-person shooters, in RPGs, in action adventure, in MMORPGs, in mobile, and I believe we’re going to have success with Squadrons as well. We’re going to double down on that partnership. Disney continues to be very, very committed to the IP and to the canon.”

Despite some negative fan feedback, EA Star Wars games were hugely popular: the two Battlefront games sold 35 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has crossed the 10 million mark. People may like to complain about the state of Star Wars, but it seems that they like to buy EA’s SW games even more.

Star Wars: Squadrons will arrive on October 2 from Hyperspace for PC, Xbox One and PS4.
