PlayStation 5: Less Average Income, Bigger Price? There Are Examples

No, we’re not talking about Brazil (where the import taxes make consoles ridiculously expensive), but a different country.

So the PlayStation 5 is going to be costly hardware (at least in countries like Hungary, where the monthly minimum wage after taxes is about 370 dollars, and the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition will be nearly 600 dollars, and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition‘s price is about 500, respectively, thanks to the 1:1 USD-EUR conversion), but there are countries where the situation looks even more of a disappointment.

Sony announced than in India, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is going to cost 39990 rupees. The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, complete with a Blu-ray drive, will be 49990. Now, if we convert it to US Dollar prices, the cheaper PlayStation 5 will be about 540 bucks, while the „complete” model is about 680. Add the fact that in India, there are people who earn 8000 rupees a month, and for many people, it’s about 31000. So they earn less money, but for them, the console will be expensive! (And this is just the tip of the iceberg, as this country has 1.3 billion people living here.)

The difference is extreme, but wait, there’s more: on Reddit, there are pricing details for the games and the accessories. The games’ costs are in line with what the Americans pay, but the accessories cost more, which feels somewhat inexplicable. There’s also no release date announced for the country yet. Where’s the logic in this?

The cherry on the cake is the price of the Xbox Series X. The stronger Microsoft console will cost 34990 rupees. So… it’s going to cost less than the PlayStation 5 DIGITAL Edition. Ouch. Even if India isn’t a major market for Sony, this is ridiculous.
