Although there is no official word about Sony killing off the manufacturing of the console that debuted in 2016, it already hints at it happening.
VGC reports that PlayStation Direct, Sony’s direct-to-customer website, where people can buy consoles directly from Sony (who is silently planning the service, currently exclusive to the United States, to expand into Europe), sneakily has taken off the PlayStation 4 Pro from the list of products that are available for purchase.
It cannot be a coincidence or a temporary lack of stock. The PlayStation 4 Pro is in a much different situation than the PlayStation 5 (which also has two models: the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – the latter is a hundred dollars/euro cheaper, but it lacks an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive), as unlike the new Sony console, the PlayStation 4‘s „mid-generation upgrade” is not that sought as the fresh hardware. And the site’s text adds fuel to the fire: „There are currently no plans to restock this item in the future.”
So the sword of Damocles is hanging above the head of the PlayStation 4 Pro, while the PlayStation 4 Slim will seemingly continue to be available. It doesn’t seem like a logical move: Sony could potentially be in a better situation by killing the PlayStation 4 Slim off, and then cut the price of the PlayStation 4 Pro to the Slim’s level, so the players can get a stronger console for the same price – one that can even run Cyberpunk 2077 somewhat respectably (unlike the base PS4 and the Xbox One, which is why both Microsoft and Sony offer refunds!).
Let’s wait for the official announcement then. The PlayStation 4 will likely continue to live on in Japan for several years – after the disappointing Western ignorance, the PlayStation Vita continued to live on there.
