The game has a sentence that seems to hint at the events that surrounded the United States Capitol… but it turned out to be nothing more than a coincidence.
On January 6, the United States Capitol was stormed. People Can Fly‘s game early on has a sentence by a player character that mentions how another character was saved „from that redneck mob storming [Washington] D.C.”. That does sound like it refers to the events seen on January 6, doesn’t it? Especially the term storming, which was a word the media in America has heavily used to mention the events, and even its Wikipedia page used this term.
However, People Can Fly and Square Enix told Kotaku that „any similarities to real-world events are purely coincidental” and that Outriders’ dialogue was written and recorded „a couple of years ago.” Kotaku added that the game’s demo, which was released on February 25, already had that line (mentioned on Reddit shortly after), so it’d have made no sense for People Can Fly to record and add this line in less than two months.
Another game that fell into this coincidental situation was Rainbow Six Parasite (or, at least that’s its current internal name, but it’s likely going to be used publicly as well), previously known as Rainbox Six Quarantine, which was first planned to debut in early 2020. However, the coronavirus global pandemic hit, and Ubisoft might have had a second thought about the game’s subtitle. Then again, in this game, you fight aliens and not a virus…
Still, it feels somewhat scary to see that a few games’ predictions of the future become reality. Just think of Warren Spector’s first Deus Ex game, which mentioned events that seem to have happened around us…
