PlayStation Plus: Sony Prepares A 33% Price Hike In A Country!

Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 is slowly starting to outpace the PlayStation 4 in Japan.

Let’s start with the PlayStation Plus price increase. It only affects Brazil, and possibly it’s nothing more than just revenge on the court ruling they got in the country (which said that they shouldn’t outright make PlayStation 5s unusable after violating the ToS regarding the PlayStation Plus Collection). Sony sent a letter to the Brazilian subscribers, which says that from July 7, a one-month subscription will be 34.9 Brazilian Real, a three-month sub will cost 84.9 BRL, and an annual subscription will cost 199.9 BRL, respectively.

That’s 6.68 USD/month, 16.24 USD/quarter, and 38.22 USD/year. Sure, you could say that it is still far less than what the United States or Europe pay (60 USD/EUR for an annual subscription), but this is after a 33% price hike, and let’s not forget that Brazil isn’t necessarily a rich country, and this applies to most of Latin America. The console itself is already ridiculously expensive in the country, too. We wonder how many subscribers will just leave after hearing about the price increase.

In Japan, the PlayStation 5 had a worse launch than the PlayStation 4, and even in the past few months, the PS5 still didn’t get off the ground that much. The difference between the two console generations is significant: the PlayStation 4 didn’t suffer from a lack of stocks, but it didn’t have many games (despite launching months after the Western debut!), while the PlayStation 5 is heavily pushed back by a lack of stocks (which will be felt even in 2022, as we mentioned the other day!).

According to Famitsu, last week’s sales charts mention that the PlayStation 5 sold more than 30 thousand units in Japan, pushing the lifetime sales to 689K in the country. In the same period counted from its launch, the PlayStation 4 hit 648K in 2014. It’s week 25, and after week 24, the PlayStation 5 had only a 14K advantage, so the new console has started to outpace the old one.

Not bad.
