MOVIE NEWS – Adam Driver and Matt Damon clash over a woman in Ridley Scott’s latest film, The Last Duel.
Ridley Scott alternates between historical dramas, sci-fi and stories set in the present. He began his career with The Duellists, before adding better (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood) and worse (Exodus) historical-costume films to his list of works set in the past. The Last Duel, while far from his last, resonates nicely with The Duelists, as it too has a bloody rivalry at its heart. It was postponed for quite some time due to the crown virus epidemic, but it looks like it may finally be released. The first full trailer has been released, which you can watch below.
Directed by Ridley Scott, The Last Duel is based on the true story and book about the event, The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager, which tells the story of the fight on 29 December 1386 between the Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and the landlord Jacques Le Gris. De Carrouges had accused Le Gris of raping his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges, earlier that year. The Count Pierre d’Alençon then ruled in Le Gris’s favour, but the knight was not satisfied and appealed to Charles VI. It was the last duel to be recognised by the court, and the stakes were not only whether or not Jean de Carrouges and his wife would be brought to justice, but also whether or not the knight would lose and his wife would be burned at the stake for slander. For those who don’t want to spoil the story for themselves, don’t read about the outcome of the confrontation!
The film stars Matt Damon as the wronged Jean de Carrouges, Jodie Comer as the woman who was betrayed, Adam “Kylo Ren” Driver as Le Gris, and Ben Affleck as the Count. The Last Duel is directed by Ridley Scott and written by Nicole Holofcener (Exes and Lovers) alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
The Last Duel is scheduled to hit cinemas on 14 October.
