Is Wanted 2 finally coming? James McAvoy is waiting for it

Wanted star James McAvoy has revealed that he would love to see what happened to master assassin Wesley Gibson in the sequel.

Wanted star James McAvoy is keen to return in a sequel and see what his character, mild-mannered office worker turned master assassin Wesley Gibson, is up to now. In a recent interview, the actor was asked which character he would most like to see the return. Mcavoy was quick to mention that he would jump at the chance to see what happened to Wesley in what will no doubt be Wanted Part 2 for fans: “I’ve always wanted to see what happened to Wesley Gibson in Wanted”.

Wanted, released in 2008, is based on the comic book miniseries of the same name by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones and revolves around Wesley Gibson, played by McAvoy, a frustrated account manager who discovers he is the son of a professional assassin. His father was once a member of a secret organisation of assassins called the Brotherhood, and Gibson is drawn into this mysterious, violent underworld, joins the secret society and struggles to overcome his panic attacks and anxiety to learn the tricks of the trade.

Timur Bekmambetov directed the original film, based on a screenplay by Michael Brandt, Derek Haas and Chris Morgan, starring Angelina Jolie as Fox, a seasoned Brotherhood member and Wesley’s mentor, and Morgan Freeman as Sloan, the Brotherhood’s leader. The Wanted bears little resemblance to the comic book it is based on but has received generally favourable reviews thanks to its fast pace, stylised action sequences and the performances of James McAvoy, Freeman and Jolie.

McAvoy is certainly not alone in wondering what Wesley was up to since the bullet-riddled finale of the first Wanted, and audiences have been clamouring for a sequel for some time. There has been talking of a sequel several times, with Mark Millar announcing around the film’s release that director Timur Bekmambetov was planning a Wanted 2. McAvoy himself revealed in 2011 that “the studio really wants to do it, and we really want to do it, but we only want to do it if and when it’s good, and that may never happen”.

Universal later hired Wanted screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas to write the script for the sequel, with Haas describing the plot as “picking up right after the events that just happened; picking up the thread of Wesley’s story a few years later and going back for another round”, while also revealing that the sequel would be “Fox-less”, meaning Jolie would not be resurrected.

However, the Wanted star isn’t the only character McAvoy is keen to bring back: the actor also said he would consider a Filth sequel to unleash him again as the drunken, drug-addled, dishonest, manipulative, misanthropic detective Bruce “Robbo” Robertson. “I loved Bruce Robertson in Filth, but I feel like I’ve been a little bit driven out of myself. I don’t know if I’d need to do it again, but I don’t know, maybe I would,” the actor explained.

So, is it time for Wanted 2 to burst onto screens? Or should we leave Wesley Gibson alone? Would you guys watch a sequel?
