Entornointeligente.com / Universal Pictures and Blumhouse (producer of films like Let me out, The Invisible Man or the La Purga franchise) are developing a new trilogy of The Exorcist, one of the most influential sagas in horror movies.

 

The new films, which will be directed by David Gordon Green (responsible for the new Halloween films), will also feature the return of Ellen Burstyn. She played Regan’s mother in the original movie.

According to its director, David Gordon Green, the new franchise will be a direct continuation of the first film that will not consider the continuity of its other instalments. However, it will include elements of the mythology of the saga developed in them.

Along with Burstyn, the film will star Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), a daughter with a terrible demon like Regan has also possessed in the past.

“The Exorcist is already written. It has been one of the projects I have done during the pandemic,” explained its director in an interview with GamesRadar, in which he also stated: “It is not incorrect to say that it is a sequel to the original film”.

“I like all the Exorcist films and not only do I like them, but I think they could be included within the mythology of what I’m doing,” Gordon Green continued explaining before assuring that he will not try to “pretend to Exorcist 2 it did not exist, it is good that it exists, it is good that they all exist and I like them”.

Everything indicates that the director plans to do something similar to what he already did with the Halloween saga, releasing direct continuations of the original film Halloween night in 2018 and the still unreleased Halloween Kills, which will hit theatres in October. He also has confirmed the premiere next year of Halloween Ends, with which he will put an end to the franchise starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

Along with Blumhouse will be in production Morgan Creek Entertainment, which owns the rights to the 1973 film. The ambitious project is reported to have a budget of more than $ 400 million for all three films.

Gordon Green has also pointed out how different it has been for him to write The Exorcist compared to his two films about Michael Myers: “This one has more documentation than impulsive writing.”

“I had to read a lot of books and do an egg of interviews because there was a lot of dramatic authenticity in the original film”, the director pointed out before adding: “It has taken a lot more work than I had anticipated, and I think I was naive to think that it would be otherwise”.

The first film of this new trilogy is expected to hit theatres in 2023. However, everything indicates that the next two will be released exclusively on the Peacock streaming platform to make the service more attractive under NBCUniversal demand with great premieres that are original.
