Hideki Kamiya Apologises For The Cancellation Of Scalebound: ‘The Obstacles Were Too Great’ [VIDEO]

The director of Scalebound chats about the cancelled Xbox One title and reveals new details.

Hideki Kamiya, designer and director of Platinum Games, has once again mentioned Scalebound, the title planned to be an Xbox One exclusive in 2017, but unfortunately never made it. In a video, Kamiya shared previously unseen details about the project’s development and apologised to both Microsoft and fans looking forward to the game.

“Scalebound was a project where we joined forces with Microsoft,” Kamiya explained. “They expected good things from us, and we had to live up to the expectations of the project.”

Kamiya said that his plan for Scalebound was to go back to something more photorealistic. While this was a personal dream, he felt it was something Platinum Games needed to do to improve the studio’s graphical quality and better compete with more modern games.

“I’ve loved fantasy worlds since I was a kid,” Kamiya continued. “I’ve always loved worlds with swords, magic and dragons, and I wanted to make something in that theme, but we were working in an environment we weren’t used to. We were using the Unreal Engine, and we didn’t know the principles of how to make a video game with online features.”

This created a massive obstacle for the studio. “I apologise to the players who were waiting to play it, and even more to Microsoft, who trusted us as a business partner.”

“As a creator and a member of Platinum Games, I would like to apologize,” Kamiya concluded.

Will Scalebound ever return? It seems the answer is up to Microsoft. Hideki Kamiya revealed a year ago that he still has no intention of abandoning the project, but he needs Phil Spencer’s approval to take the next step.
