PlatinumGames Lost A Lot Of People After Scalebound’s Cancellation

Jean Pierre (JP) Kellams, who formerly worked at PlatinumGames, revealed that the Japanese studio hit somewhat of a slump after Scalebound‘s rug got pulled from under him.

Okay, nowadays PlatinumGames is in great standing (The Wonderful 101 Remastered’s self-publishing, Project G.G., a new studio in Tokyo to work on console live service games…), but in early 2017, things were different. Three years ago, we started the year by Microsoft suddenly announcing that Scalebound, which was in development for Xbox One and Windows 10, got cancelled.

JP Kellams’ tweet comes in here. He has insight on things, as he was one of the producers of Scalebound, plus he was the creative director of the studio (as well as a writer on Vanquish). Let’s see what he wrote: „We had our chance. We failed. They know why we failed. Lots of great people left after we failed. Some because we failed. I’m sad that it is now a drunken meme. I have enormous respect for all of the hard work everyone put into Scalebound. I’m happy The Wonderful 101’s Kickstarter was successful and wish PG all the best. But SB was joy and success and happiness and pain and failures and tears. I’d love to see it made. It just isn’t a joke to me.”

This was in response to Hideki Kamiya’s comment on The Wonderful 101 Remastered’s Kickstarter-closing video/stream. He was the director of Scalebound, and he said that he would love to work on the game and that we should email Microsoft about it. Kellams did not go into further details, and he has no reason to: he no longer works at PlatinumGames, and now he’s at Electronic Arts as a producer on the Madden NFL series (Superstar KO, Madden Ultimate Team).

Scalebound’s IP is owned by Microsoft, so there’s no exceptional situation here as with The Wonderful 101 (Nintendo allowed a multiplatform remaster, this is why the game will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC).
