Ori’s Creators Next Game Not To Be Published By Microsoft – Developers Reveal What’s Behind The Decision

Moon Studios, the developer of the Ori games, will be publishing its next adventure with Private Division instead of Microsoft, but no further details have been released.

The Ori franchise is one of the rare Microsoft games to cross the Xbox One and PC boundaries, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps could be released on Nintendo Switch. Despite its success, Moon Studios, the company responsible for the title, would prefer to go in a different direction regarding the distribution of their upcoming games, and Private Division will publish their new title. The studio’s director has now revealed the reasoning behind the decision.

Tomas Mahler was speaking to Resetera following Phil Spencer’s comments about Bungie. Here, the lead developer recalls some of the experiences with Ori that made him think about other platforms:

“A lot of gamers have always said how much they loved Ori but hated that they couldn’t play it on PlayStation,” Mahler explains.

“Luckily, Microsoft allowed us to port Ori to Nintendo Switch, but it wasn’t free, and they probably allowed it because it wasn’t a big enough name to cause too much trouble.”

Following the statement, the director revealed that Moon Studios wants to expand its future experience to all players, regardless of platform, “We have a big vision for our next game that we want everyone to play together, across all systems where Moon has the platform and IP, and we can take it in the best direction to hopefully make as many people happy as possible without having to tell some of them they have to give up the experience for business reasons.”

What Moon Studios has in store is yet to be seen, although their intentions for their current platforms are known. It’s not the first time Tomas Mahler has made specific comments online, and although this time he was only explaining the studio’s vision, it’s worth noting that he has had problems in the past when talking about Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man’s Sky. However, Phil Spencer has been clear about his thoughts on console wars, revealing in a recent interview that he wastes no energy trying to destroy other platforms.
