MOVIE NEWS – James Cameron has given details about the production and plot of Avatar 2
In 2009, James Cameron released one of the most ambitious and highest-grossing films of all time: Avatar. Now the director is working on the second of four planned sequels.
The long-awaited Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 16, 2022, and Entertainment Weekly has picked up some statements from director James Cameron talking about how challenging it has been to shoot this film and show some first images from the set of the film.
The director has defined the development process (which has taken 10 years) of Avatar 2 as “a bit crazy”. And this statement is no exaggeration, as the sequel is set mainly around the ocean, introducing a new reef-dwelling Na’vi clan called the Metkayina.
Story-wise, Avatar 2 is set some 14 years after the original: Former human soldier Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) formed a family, and much of the film focuses on their pre-teen offspring.
And setting a story below sea level presents more than a challenge. The innovative motion capture process designed for the first Avatar film was not intended to work underwater, so Cameron and his team had to devise a way to accurately record the smaller movements and expressions of the actors while they were submerged, as we see in the images.
If all goes according to plan, the Avatar sequel will arrive in 2022, while the third, fourth and fifth parts will hit theatres in 2024,2026 and 2028, respectively.
